The Great Downzoning

The publication
A magazine of long essays on how the world gets better or fails to. Wonkish and optimistic, read by policy people and founders. Art direction favors clean, ideas-first images.
The story
Samuel Hughes traces how, over a few decades, nearly every Western city made it illegal to build denser, and argues the freeze came from homeowner incentives rather than planning ideals. The housing shortage follows from it. The piece as published. The full text and the photography that ran with it are in the class packet.
Do not send
No cranes at sunset, no generic skylines.
