The terms

Meaning Layer is a library. It is offered as it is, without warranty of any kind, and it may change or go away. Use of the site is acceptance of what follows.

The texts

The works in the library are published here because they are in the public domain or because their rights holder permits it. Each edition states its own provenance in its colophon — where the text came from, what was done to it, and under what terms — and that statement, not this page, is the authority for a given work.

Read them, quote them, cite them, print them. Where a work is in the public domain, the text is yours to do anything with; the typesetting, the apparatus and the software around it are not.

What we ask

Do not scrape the site at a rate that costs anyone else their reading. Do not present a text from this library as something other than what its colophon says it is. Do not use the library to host, or to launder, work you have no right to publish.

Your own marks

Annotations, reading positions and settings are yours. They are kept in your own browser and are not sent anywhere — see the privacy note for exactly where they live and what that means when you clear them.

Courses

A course published here is the reading and the schedule. Enrolment, credit and grades of record are the institution’s, not this site’s, and nothing on these pages changes what a registrar holds. The syllabus of record is the one your institution issued.

Corrections

If a text here is wrong, say so — every passage has a permanent address, so a correction can name exactly what it is about. How to reach us.
