What this is
Meaning Layer studies design through meaning: original research and writing on meaning-making and designing for meaning, read through psychology, mythology, theology, and the history of the craft. It takes the form of a library, a classroom, and a publication, and it stays with the texts: every connection it draws can be followed back to the passage that occasioned it.
The argument
Design began as a way of making meaning visible. A made thing carries an image, and the image reaches further back than the brief that produced it. The depth psychologists took this seriously: symbol, archetype, and the collective unconscious were working materials to them, the stuff a life is made from. Design once took it seriously too. Somewhere along the way the field grew efficient, the image was flattened into the interface, and the human at the center of human-centered design became the measurable human.
This project returns design to its depths. The discourse narrowed; the work here widens it and takes it back to meaning.
Three commitments
Text is addressable. Every passage has a permanent identifier and a human reference. You can point at it, cite it, link to it, and come back to it in a year.
Annotation is separate. Commentary, connections, questions and patterns an AI model has found are stored beside the text, anchored to spans, never mixed into it. The text stays what it is, which is what makes a connection auditable rather than an assertion.
One source, every surface. The same document renders to the screen, the headphone and the printed page. A reading is not a web page that also has a PDF; it is a work with manifestations. That commitment is why this is a library and not a website, and why the typography is treated as an engineering concern.
Where the machine is allowed
The scale of the connection problem is the reason for the machine: no person reads Jung, Ruskin, Morris, Otto, scripture, and a stack of contemporary design writing closely enough to find every echo. So the rule is that the machine may propose, the text must anchor, and the human must judge. Connections an AI model finds enter as annotations with a span, a quote and a block revision, exactly like a human note, equally reviewable, and marked as not yet checked, visibly, always.
And it is taught
The library is also a classroom. Courses are taught from these texts, with the schedule, the readings and the work in the same place the reading happens, and a student’s annotations are the coursework. The classroom holds the terms that are running.
