Piriform quartic

John Wallis, 1685

A pear-shaped quartic, its name from the Latin for pear. A point P runs round a circle through O, and Q is the point at P’s height on a fixed line square to the circle’s diameter through O. The curve is traced where the line OQ crosses the vertical through P.

a⁴y² = b²x³(2a - x)
