Parabola
Menaechmus, 4th century BC
Every point of a parabola lies as far from a fixed point, the focus, as from a fixed line, the directrix. Menaechmus studied it in the 4th century BC and used it to double the cube. Rays parallel to its axis are reflected through the focus, which is why dish antennas and solar furnaces take its shape. Galileo showed that a thrown body follows a parabola.
