Hyperbola
Menaechmus; named by Apollonius of Perga
Menaechmus found the hyperbola while working on doubling the cube, and Apollonius of Perga named it, from the Greek for excess. Its points are those whose distances to two foci differ by the same length, 2a, and its two branches run out toward a pair of crossing asymptotes. Over a day, the shadow of the tip of a pole traces one on the ground.
x²/a² - y²/b² = 1
