The cubic x³ + y³ = 3axy: a leaf-shaped loop with a double point at the origin, and two arms running off along the same slanting asymptote. The loop and the region between the arms and the asymptote have the same area, 3a²/2. Descartes proposed it in 1638 and challenged Fermat to find its tangent at any point.
x³ + y³ - 3axy = 0
