Archimedean spiral
Conon of Samos and Archimedes, 3rd century BC
The path of a point moving at a steady speed along a line that turns at a steady rate about one of its points. Any ray from the centre crosses its turns at equal steps, as in the groove of an early gramophone record. Archimedes knew that the area swept in the first turn is a third of the circle drawn round it.
r = bθ
