Torus knot

Otto Schreier, 1924

A curve wound on a torus, p times round its axis and q times through its hole. When p and q have no common factor it closes up as one knot, and the (2, 3) knot is the trefoil. When they share a factor g the curve falls into g knots, linked together. The (p, q) and (q, p) knots are the same knot, and it comes undone only when p or q is 1.

(r cos pφ, r sin pφ, -sin qφ), r = cos qφ + 2
