Lamé curve

Gabriel Lamé, 1818

The curves |x/a|ⁿ + |y/b|ⁿ = 1, studied by Gabriel Lamé in 1818. At n = 2 it is an ellipse and at n = 1 a rhombus; above 2 it fills out toward its rectangle, and below 1 it pinches into a four-pointed star with concave sides, the astroid at n = 2/3.

|x/a|ⁿ + |y/b|ⁿ = 1
