Bicorn

James Joseph Sylvester, 1864

A quartic with two cusps, also called the cocked hat curve for its likeness to the bicorne hat. Sylvester named it for its two cusps in 1864, and Cayley studied it in 1867. Charlotte Scott gave a construction of it in 1896 from two touching circles.

y²(a² - x²) = (x² + 2ay - a²)²
